The Pilates method is named for Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 in Germany. He turned to exercise and athletic conditioning in order to recover from childhood ailments such as asthma and rickets. The wellness journey that he forged not only empowered him to transform his own body, he also dedicated himself to helping others do the same.
In the early 20th century, Joseph Pilates developed "Contrology" (the original name of the Pilates method) which aimed to strengthen the core, elongate the spine, develop lean muscle tone, increase flexibility and improve body awareness.
